Talk:Discount brokerage

From finiki, the Canadian financial wiki

Lead section

The current lead section is partly a comparison of discount versus full service brokers. Nowadays, a typical young investor looking to open a brokerage account will probably not even look at full service brokers. So the comparison could be moved to a 'history' section, or a 'comparison' section. Instead, the lead section should summarize what a discount broker is and does, and how they can be used (including for long-term investing). Also introduce the subsequent sections. --Quebec 08:47, 28 November 2016 (MST)

I did not notice a discussion of full service brokers in the lead section. The only mention is a forum link in "Further reading". Has the text been removed? --LadyGeek 16:53, 29 November 2016 (MST)
"Before the advent of discount brokers it used to be that only the wealthy could afford a broker and access to the stock market" -- using a full service broker with high commissions.
"Traditional brokers in contrast will often provide financial advice and investment planning as well as related wealth management services." -- here traditional broker means full service as well. --Quebec 13:12, 1 December 2016 (MST)
I missed that the last sentence of the lead section is the comparison. I don't think there is enough content to justify moving this sentence to a separate section. Comparing traditional to discount brokers is helpful to define what a discount broker is not. I suggest the sentence remain in-place for this perspective. --LadyGeek 17:23, 1 December 2016 (MST)
Reading the lead section again, almost all of it can be seen as a comparison btw discount and full service. So I reiterate my Nov. 2016 comment at the top of this discussion. --Quebec 29 Oct 2017
