Talk:Investment planning

From finiki, the Canadian financial wiki

Orphan page, what is it's purpose?

I stumbled upon this page looking for something else. This page is essentially an orphan, no other articles link here. The edit history suggests it is a companion to Asking portfolio questions, but the wiki syntax and formatting make it look like a rough cut and paste from elsewhere. What is it's purpose and how should it be integrated (linked) into the wiki? --Peculiar Investor 11:31, 8 December 2015 (MST)

It was intended to be a companion to Asking portfolio questions, but now seems appropriate as a {{See also|Investment planning}} in Creating a financial plan#Investing. --LadyGeek 17:20, 8 December 2015 (MST)
Reading the page quickly it seems that everthing is covered elsewhere (in other pages), except 'Investing Priority' which is an interesting topic, more broady defined as 'asset location' (as opposed to allocation). Possibly the Template:Portfolio design sidebar and the Template:Retirement planning sidebar would both benefit from including an 'asset location' page? This topic is partly covered by Tax-efficient investing and TFSAs versus RRSPs but not quite from the angle of 'asset location', which should be a short high-level presentation, with links to other pages such as Tax-efficient investing and TFSAs versus RRSPs. If an 'asset location' page is created, with 'Investing Priority' moved there, then the present page can perhaps be deleted.--Quebec 17:23, 8 December 2015 (MST)
I actually found a significant link, Financial Wisdom Forum topic: "My Portfolio: Seeking Advice" which further supports the companion article history. Need to do some further thinking/digging on how to move forward. I concur with Quebec, there is a lot of overlap with other articles. --Peculiar Investor 17:36, 8 December 2015 (MST)
I decided to be bold and renamed Asking portfolio questions to My Portfolio: Seeking Advice - it should match the FWF topic title. Then, I see new comments here. I'll stop updating links until this has been dug into more. --LadyGeek 17:46, 8 December 2015 (MST)
Getting started and Creating a financial plan could replace Investment planning in the sticky (Financial Wisdom Forum topic: "My Portfolio: Seeking Advice"). --Quebec 14:29, 9 December 2015 (MST)

Investment priority & asset location

My idea of an new 'asset location' page (from a few days ago) is probably not needed, as Tax-efficient investing covers this nicely. However I really want to save the 'investment priority' section of the current investment planning page. I'm looking at Tax-efficient investing as a possible place for this section, but (1) tax-efficient investing is a long article already, and (2) the priority list ccertainly takes taxes into account, but also employer contributions to RRSPs and govt grants within RESPs. So it's about more than just taxes. Any ideas where to move the 'investment priority' section? --Quebec 17:03, 9 December 2015 (MST)

'investment priority' is an important topic which should have its own discussion. See the Bogleheads wiki page: Prioritizing investments --LadyGeek 20:11, 9 December 2015 (MST)
See User:Quebec/Prioritizing investments, inspired by the 'investment priority' section of the current 'investment planning' page, and Prioritizing investments. If we have a finiki page about 'Prioritizing investments', my feeling is that everything in the current 'investment planning' page is covered elsewhere, altough this would need to be checked carefully before deletion or archival. --Quebec 07:17, 10 December 2015 (MST)

Article still reads as and cites many Bogleheads references that might not be known or understood by Canadians and FWF'ers.

This article is intended to be one of the main introduction articles to new investors. Based on the history is comes from a Bogleheads wiki article, although there is the Investment planning article on the Bogleheads wiki, just a redirect. There are many specific references to Bogleheads members and concepts that are probably foreign to Canadian investors and FWF'ers. It probably needs some attention and rework to maintain these important concepts but explain them using Canadian references and sources. --Peculiar Investor 06:59, 30 January 2021 (MST)
