Talk:Low cost banking
Credit cards
Hi Davis, thanks for getting involved in finiki, new editors are welcome. In "low cost banking", you added a statement on credit cards in the section on how to select a bank:
- Availability of credit cards that suit your needs, such as those without annual fees, or that offer loyalty rewards, or that offer low interest on outstanding balances
I understand the idea, but there is no need to pick a credit card from the same bank as the one where you have your chequing account. Doing that can offer some convenience, sure, but it can have downsides as well, see "Right of Offset" in the Credit card article. In general, I think that many FWFers select their credit cards independently from their banking packages, and that what credit cards a bank offers should not influence your selection of a basic banking package (e.g. chequing account) too much. So I would suggest removing that as a criteria here. Regards, - Quebec 07:34, 4 December 2025 (EST)
- Hi Quebec, I see your point. I was thinking of the sort of person who would be drawn to Tangerine, PC Financial, etc. I think that a lot would be young people, new Canadians, and low income people, who would value the convenience, and may need to have a relationship with the FI to get a credit card. Many people looking for a fee-free bank account would also be looking for the sort of fee-free credit card that these FIs offer. I agree that for a lot of people, it would be irrelevant. Who is our audience for finiki? Is it the sort of people who read FWF, or is a broader audience of people looking to learn about personal finance?
- Would adding this to the beginning of the point address your concerns?
- If you want the convenience of having a credit card from the same bank, you want want to look at the ...."

- "Who is our audience for finiki? Is it the sort of people who read FWF, or is a broader audience of people looking to learn about personal finance?"- for the current page, given the topic, let's aim for the broader audience.
- "Would adding this to the beginning...", yes (mostly), but replace "want want" by "might want". - Quebec 11:24, 6 December 2025 (EST)
