Talk:My Portfolio: Seeking Advice

From finiki, the Canadian financial wiki

In cloning from the Bogleheads wiki, which is US based, I'm thinking there still needs work to adapt to a Canadian point of view. As a first pass:

  • In the opening, the word advice has a financial context that might be too strong for use on an online discussion forum. I would think that FWF members tend to provide recommendations and/or opinions, rather than advise.
  • I'd question whether Tax Filing Status is relevant in a Canadian context?
  • For Tax Rate, it seems to me that most Canadians talk about their marginal tax rate (combined federal and provincial). What additional insight is gained from having the breakdown and would any opinions/recommendations change based on the information? If not, then simplify.
  • For Canadians, stock allocation outside of Canada generally gets broken into US and International.

Trimming

I've made a few word changes, but mostly just cut out stuff that I thought was extraneous, given my experience in the financial industry and as an editor. Comments please. --Parvus 20:26, 25 July 2013 (MDT)

I've noticed you removed the section Key Points. I think this needs to be stated somewhere:
  • In the Current Assets section, please make sure that percentages add up to 100% across all of your accounts, not within each account.
Investors should consider their entire portfolio, not just each account.
Additional suggestion: The intro wording in Investment planning should be consistent with this page.
BTW - You should use the Wikipedia signature convention, which is the 3rd icon from the left in the editors' toolbar (pencil icon). It looks like this: --~~~~ until you hit Show preview or , then it auto-magically fills in your name and a time / date stamp.
