Template talk:Equities sidebar

From finiki, the Canadian financial wiki

The items under the "Investment Styles" section header seem more like a collection of Styles and Strategies to me. Would a change to the section header improve it? --Peculiar Investor 13:54, 10 October 2012 (MDT)

Since there was no feedback or objections, I was bold and changed the section header--Peculiar Investor 06:59, 15 October 2012 (MDT)
Shouldn't you change the category? --Shakespeare 10:23, 15 October 2012 (MDT)

I think Investment strategy would be more accurate. (I missed the initial comment from 10 Oct.) --LadyGeek 15:50, 15 October 2012 (MDT)

Investment strategy does cover some items, but others are covered by another Wikipedia article, Investment style. Digging further, there are wider implications on articles such as Investment styles and Category:Investment_Styles. On one hand, the original section header seems to at least be consistently applied across finiki, on the other hand, based on the Wikipedia links, there does seem to be a mixture of styles and strategies. So should we return to the original section header, or perhaps this leads to opportunity to split articles to address the difference between an investment style and an investment strategy. Seems worth pondering. --Peculiar Investor 17:13, 15 October 2012 (MDT)

Good point. From an investor's perspective, I don't see any added value to categorize these separately. They all have the same purpose - how to invest. Technically, they can be categorized into styles and strategies. But at this level, I don't think it matters much. Further splitting may cause the information to be separated and therefore harder for the reader to find the information. I suggest to leave this revision as-is. --LadyGeek 18:30, 15 October 2012 (MDT)

I suggest to leave this revision as-is but tidy up inconsistencies.--Shakespeare 18:33, 15 October 2012 (MDT)

I added Passive management to the Equities Sidebar, hoping it would point to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passive_management but it not dot, can someone fix it? Thanks -Quebec

Oh I see, beginners mistake, "Passive management" is from Wikipedia. I'll remove it from now (but we need something better about passive management in finiki)- Quebec 10:37, 23 December 2013 (MST)

The sidebar has bold titles (Categories), one of which is "International Equities". I suggest that we replace this by "Foreign equities", "Global stocks" or something similar. Typically US stocks are not considered "international" in Canada: according to CIFSC, "funds in the International Equity category must invest at least 90% of their equity assets in countries other than Canada and the United States". This fits with the Classification section of the Equities page where US equities and international equities are listed on separate lines, without indentations (i.e. one is not a subset of the other). --Quebec 12:06, 23 December 2014 (MST)

According to the Fund Category List (from Canadian Investment Funds Standards Committee), each of Emerging markets, international, and US equities are distinct categories. I suggest the broader category of "Equities" be used instead. --LadyGeek 11:33, 24 December 2014 (MST)
That wouldn't work, the whole sidebar is called "Equities". The 1st category is Canadian equities. Then we would have global/foreign equities, of which there are 3 types (US, intl, EM). --Quebec 07:27, 26 December 2014 (MST)
Perhaps then to create separate "Emerging Market", "International", and "US" headings, with the relevant funds under each one? Simple and correct. I don't think the length of the menu is a concern, but now I think that the "Strategies and styles" entries really don't belong under equities. Split into a new sidebar? I can update the related pages. --LadyGeek 14:41, 26 December 2014 (MST)
Equities could also benefit from the CIFSC reference material. I added a link. --LadyGeek 11:33, 24 December 2014 (MST)
